General

Ascent Headcount is a mobile application designed for care facility staff to efficiently complete headcount rounds. Using NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, staff can quickly scan tags to verify and record student presence, ensuring accurate and timely headcount records.

Ascent Headcount is available for:

  • Android: Devices running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later with NFC capability
  • iOS: iPhone 7 and later running iOS 13.0 or later (NFC reading requires iPhone 7 or newer)

For best results, we recommend using devices with reliable NFC hardware.

An internet connection is required for:

  • Initial login and authentication
  • Syncing headcount data with the server
  • Receiving app updates

However, NFC scanning can work offline temporarily, and data will sync when you're back online.

Installation

Since Ascent Headcount is distributed directly (not through Google Play Store), Android requires you to allow installation from "unknown sources." This is a standard security feature.

To enable installation:

  • When prompted, tap "Settings"
  • Enable "Allow from this source" for your browser
  • Return and complete the installation

This is a one-time setting and does not compromise your device security.

Android: The app automatically checks for updates when launched. If an update is available, you'll see a notification with the option to download and install the new version.

iOS: Updates are delivered through the App Store. Enable automatic updates or check the App Store regularly for new versions.

If installation fails, try these steps:

  • Ensure you have at least 100MB of free storage space
  • Restart your device and try downloading again
  • Try using a different browser (Chrome recommended for Android)
  • Make sure you've enabled installation from unknown sources
  • Check that the APK file downloaded completely (should be ~55MB)

If problems persist, contact support with your device model and Android version.

NFC & Scanning

If NFC scanning isn't working:

  • Check NFC is enabled: Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC (Android) or Settings > NFC (iOS)
  • Remove phone case: Thick cases can interfere with NFC signals
  • Position correctly: Hold the back of your phone directly against the NFC tag
  • Hold steady: Keep your phone still for 1-2 seconds while scanning
  • Check tag condition: Ensure the NFC tag isn't damaged or obstructed

The NFC antenna location varies by device:

  • Most Android phones: Center of the back panel
  • iPhone: Top of the phone (near the camera)
  • Samsung: Usually center-back, near the camera

For best results, hold the center-back of your phone against the NFC tag. If that doesn't work, try slowly moving the phone across the tag until it reads.

Account & Login

To reset your password:

  • Open the app and tap "Login"
  • Tap "Forgot Password?"
  • Enter your email address
  • Check your email for a password reset link
  • Follow the link to create a new password

If you don't receive the email, check your spam folder or contact your organization's administrator.

Login credentials are provided by your organization's administrator. Contact your supervisor or IT department to request access to Ascent Headcount.

App Won't Open

  1. Force close the app completely
  2. Clear the app cache in Settings > Apps
  3. Restart your device
  4. Reinstall if the issue persists

Sync Issues

  1. Check your internet connection
  2. Try switching between WiFi and mobile data
  3. Log out and log back in
  4. Contact support if data is missing
